MODERN PAINTINGS: OIL PAINTINGS ON CANVAS
Explore the Paintings Section of the Davis Museum
The Paintings Section from the Davis Museum in Barcelona was created from various conceptual and formal inspirations. Conceptually, The Museum of American Art in Berlin (MoAA) was a major influence in the creation of this section, specifically in its creation of a group of large-format paintings that documented crucial moments of the arrival of American culture in Europe after World War II. Formally, the paintings of Gerhard Richter, were also a major inspiration, particularly his technique of projecting and drawing photographs onto canvas and blurring them in the re-creation process. Since 2020, other artists have also been an inspiration for the creation of this section: Henri Matisse,Giorgio de Chirico,Francis Bacon,George Condo, and David Hockney, for their free use of color, shapes, composition and their use of disconcerting perspectives. I hope that viewers will understand the narrative of artists who have created their own museums, such as Marcel Duchamp'sBoîte-en-valise,Robert Filliou'sGalerie Légitime, and Marcel Broodthaers'Musée d'Art Moderne, Département des Aigles. The Davis Museum, symbolically created in an electoral urn and primarily disseminated through social media, is a ready-made sculpture, a collection of small-format contemporary art, an online digital archive, a non-profit collective art project, and a cultural entity recognized by the Generalitat de Catalunya. The Paintings Section From Davis Museum is the only section where the works are for sale both on Saatchi Art and at DCS Contemporary, and it is divided into portraits and still lifes that represent the previously mentioned artists and their works. I chose oil on canvas as my medium because I am interested in this technique, not only for its versatility as a medium, but also for its historical deposit of images and ideas. I only used the best painting materials: linen canvas, Old Holland oil paints and Talens medium and varnish. Since the Davis Museum is a cube, I chose the square format for all paintings. As for color, they can be divided into three periods: the "Grey Period", which includes paintings made between 2011 and 2016; subsequently, the "Blue Period", which covers works made between 2016 and 2018; and finally, "Full Color Period" which includes works made from 2019 to the present.
